STD TESTING & HIV TREATMENT

Recommendation For People Who Needs STD/STI Testing

  • STD tests are relatively lower in costs compared to other surgical procedures.
  • We recommend foreigners residing in Korea to make an appointment for the STD checkup.
  • Fees can differ based on which STD tests you are taking.
  • If you have insurance in Korea, you will be able to get a lower fee for the test.
  • You may visit our clinic without an appointment; however, on busy days, there can be waiting time.

1. Urethritis

  • Urethritis is commonly referred to as the most frequent sexually transmitted disease (STD), with gonorrhea being the most notable cause.
  • Symptom Onset:
  • Symptoms typically manifest after a 2-day to 1-month latency period post-sexual activity.
  • Common Symptoms:
  • Urethral discomfort, pain or burning during urination, itching, redness around the urethral opening, and possible discharge or pus.
  • Gonorrhea Treatment:
  • Can lead to complications if treatment is delayed, though it generally responds well to therapy.
  • Non-Gonococcal Urethritis (NGU):
  • Identifying the causative pathogen is challenging, leading to frequent recurrences despite long-term treatment.
  • Recurrence Rate:
  • Approximately 10-40% of cases may experience recurrence after antibiotic treatment.

2. Genital Herpes

  • Genital herpes is a contagious disease caused by the herpes virus. Once infected, the herpes virus remains in the body and can recur continuously.
  • Genital Herpes: A recurrent chronic disease with an average incubation period of about 6 days (ranging from 1 to 26 days).
  • Unaware Carriers: Approximately two-thirds of herpes carriers can unknowingly transmit the virus to others, mainly because most patients have very mild or no symptoms.
  • Symptomatology : The disease is characterized by lesions that start as clusters of vesicles on an erythematous base, progress to pustules and ulcers, and ultimately form crusts.

3. Genital Warts

  • Genital warts (condyloma acuminata or venereal warts) are caused by infection with the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). They appear as small bumps around the genitals, anus, and vulva, either singly or grouped together, resembling a rooster's comb or cauliflower.
  • Incubation Period: Genital warts (condyloma acuminata) have an average incubation period of 3 to 4 months, which can extend up to 8 months.
  • Transmission Risk: There's a possibility of unknowingly transmitting HPV to a loved one.
  • Appearance: The warts may appear as slightly raised bumps or cauliflower-shaped masses on the skin of the penis, vulva, or other genital areas. They typically cluster together but can occasionally appear scattered.
  • Age and Resolution: Infection commonly occurs at a young age, with over 80% of cases naturally resolving within 18 months.

4. Syphilis

  • Syphilis is a disease caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum, which enters through sexual contact, leading to the formation of hard ulcers and lumps on the genitals. Unlike other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), syphilis can progress through the bloodstream to stages 1, 2, and 3, potentially resulting in death.
  • Stage 1 Syphilis (Primary Syphilis): Chancre
  • A painless ulcer, often singular and crater-like, appears approximately 3 to 90 days after infection. The ulcer may persist for up to 5 weeks. Although it heals on its own, the syphilis bacteria remain in the body. Swelling of local lymph nodes may also occur.
  • Stage 2 Syphilis (Secondary Syphilis)
  • Occurs about 2 weeks to 6 months post-infection, featuring skin rashes, particularly on the palms and soles, lasting 2 to 6 weeks. Grey ulcers may appear in the mouth and throat. Systemic symptoms can include fatigue and hair loss.
  • Stage 3 Syphilis (Tertiary Syphilis)
  • Begins approximately 2 to 30 years after the initial infection, leading to the development of small tumors on the skin, bones, and internal organs. Complications may affect the heart and blood vessels. Neurological problems can result in vision loss.

5. Chancroid

  • Chancroid is a sexually transmitted disease caused by the bacterium Haemophilus ducreyi. Unlike the hard chancre typical of syphilis, chancroid ulcers are soft to the touch, which is how the disease gets its name. The infection begins as red bumps on the genitals that fill with pus and are soft and painful, differing from the painless nature of syphilis lesions.
  • Chancroid vs. Primary Syphilis:
  • Similar initial appearance but chancroid features painful ulcers.
  • Does not spread beyond genital area or cause systemic diseases, unlike syphilis.
  • Incubation Period:
  • Ranges from 5 to 14 days.
  • Primary Sites of Infection in Men:
  • Affects the foreskin, coronal sulcus, and shaft of the penis.
  • Begins as papules or pustules, developing into painful inflammatory ulcers.
  • Complications:
  • Approximately 30% of patients experience painful inguinal lymphadenopathy, which may naturally rupture.

6. Pubic Lice & Scabies

  • Pubic lice, also known as crabs, have humans as their only host and are typically found in pubic hair but can also be present in chest hair, armpits, and other areas with hair. Transmission can occur through direct sexual contact and, less commonly, through non-sexual means. The lice or their eggs can be observed clinging to hair, and infestation can cause itching, redness, and skin irritation.
  • Scabies is primarily transmitted through close, non-sexual contact between people, causing severe nocturnal itching. As a result of the itching, papules or nodules can develop around the genital area, and in severe cases, pyoderma (a bacterial skin infection that produces pus) may occur.

7. AIDS

  • The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is the virus that causes Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). Being infected with this virus is referred to as HIV infection. When a person is infected with HIV, the virus attacks and destroys the immune cells in the body, leading to a decrease in immune function.
  • Acute HIV Syndrome:
  • Occurs 1 to 6 weeks after infection during the initial incubation period.
  • Symptoms resemble a severe cold or flu, including fever, malaise, fatigue, sore throat, loss of appetite, muscle and joint pain, headache, stiff neck, nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.
  • These symptoms are often mistaken for a common cold due to their similarity.
  • Progression to AIDS:
  • When immunity drops below a certain level, various infectious diseases uncommon in healthy individuals occur.
  • Immune deficiency leads to a significant increase in malignant tumors, potentially resulting in death.
  • AIDS Diagnosis:
  • The condition is diagnosed when immune function has significantly declined, allowing the emergence of specific infections and tumors indicative of AIDS.
